An uproar which took full force after the announcement of what worshippers of a church in Abuja described as legalisation of practices alien to Christian culture, triggered lethal force from Nigerian police to restore public order.

Members of the church in question, according to local media are identified as members of the United Methodist Church – Durumi, expressed their displeasure with new practices to be inculcated into the church per instructions of the mother church to the pastor, based in the United States of America.

They argued that the practices to be made part of church activities were against African culture and will not condone it.

Elders of the church in light of this, called for a separation of the church from the parent church.

The violence erupted between members who stood for the break up and those against it. The police resorted to the use of tear gas to
ease tensions.

FCT Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh told reporters that all elders of the church have been invited to command for interrogation and further interrogation.
