The Public Relations Officer of the Okada Riders Association, Solomon Akpanaba, has expressed strong satisfaction with the passage of the Road Traffic Amendment Bill, describing it as a major relief for commercial motorcycle riders across the country.
Speaking on the Happy Morning Show with Fati Shaibu-Ali, Mr. Akpanaba said the new law will allow okada riders to operate without undue interference. He noted that the amendment fulfills promises made by President John Dramani Mahama to riders, adding that they are now eagerly awaiting presidential assent so full operations can begin.
According to him, members of the association have studied the provisions of the law and are committed to complying with all its requirements. He said okada riders have looked forward to this development for a long time and see it as a turning point for their business.
Mr. Akpanaba further revealed plans by the association to establish training institutions to properly train riders, improve riding skills, and promote safety on the roads.
However, he criticized the National Road Safety Authority, accusing it of failing to adequately educate road users, particularly riders, on road safety issues. He stressed that effective education on traffic regulations and the consequences of road incidents would significantly reduce accidents.
He explained that in the absence of sufficient education from road safety authorities, okada riders often take it upon themselves to advise passengers and fellow riders to adhere to safety measures to avoid accidents.
Touching on operational challenges, Mr. Akpanaba said riders have faced difficulties due to the lack of designated stations for their activities. He disclosed that the association has engaged various metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies to secure approved stations that will enable them operate in an organized and safe manner.
