Convenor of Democracy Hub, Oliver Baker-Vormawor has been released from police custody after fulfilling his bail conditions.

The Accra High Court granted him bail on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, setting the amount at twenty thousand Ghana cedis (GH₵20,000) with two sureties, both without justification. He was officially released on Monday, October 21, 2024, following a closed-door meeting at the High Court in Accra.

Baker-Vormawor had been arrested and arraigned for unlawful conduct during a three-day protest organized from September 21 to 23, 2024. The demonstration, dubbed #StopGalamseyNow, aimed to demand urgent action against illegal mining activities in the country and was detained alongside 52 other participants during the protest.

Speaking after his release, his mother, Madam Bernice Kumodzi, expressed her joy and relief at seeing her son regain his freedom.

Oliver Baker-Vormawor’s arrest had sparked public conversations about the right to peaceful protest and the use of force during civil demonstrations.
