Dorcas Affo-Toffey, Member of Parliament for the Jomoro Constituency has expressed her deep concern over the demolition of the Osagyefo Power Barge by a private firm identified as Misak Limited.
In a recent interview on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun, Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey, alleged that the demolition which was reportedly authorized by government, has sparked anger among the youth of Jomoro, who are demanding answers and considering staging a demonstration.
According to Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey, she had assigned individuals to assess the progress of the power barge’s development after the Energy Minister initially said that approximately 90% of the barge had been dismantled.
However, the feedback she received revealed that the entire facility, 100% of it, had been destroyed.
“The current issue bothering the constituency is the fact that everything is gone. People are annoyed and the youth of Jomoro have threatened to embark on a demonstration to demand answers.”
The MP further expressed her astonishment and frustration at the ease with which a private company was able to gain access to a state asset of such significance and dismantle it without any apparent oversight.
“What’s amusing and annoying to me is the fact an individual company can just walk in on a state asset, we’re talking about a huge power barge and just dismantle everything. So it was like trucks upon trucks upon trucks that have gone to carry everything at the full glare of the local government that’s the MCE and the security services. Because within the community there are a lot of police posts so it does make sense that the trucks were allowed to leave without any questions and causing damage to the state.”
The Osagyefo Power Barge, which had been a vital source of electricity in the region, was a crucial asset for the Jomoro constituency. Its sudden demolition has raised serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and the protection of public resources. The community members and constituents, represented by the Jomoro youth, feel betrayed by the government’s decision to hand over the power barge to a private firm and the subsequent destruction of the asset.
Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey has called for legal action to be taken against Misak Limited and pledges to ensure that those responsible for the unauthorized demolition of the power barge are held accountable.
