The Chief Executive Officer of newly crowned champions of Ghana Women’s Premier League (GWPL), Ampem Darkoa Ladies F.C, Nana Opoku Fosu Gyeabour has shared the motivation behind their victory.
According to him, they yearned to end the monopoly of Hasaacas Ladies after losing the league title to them the previous season.
In an interview with Odiasempa Kwame Oware, the CEO for Ampem Darkoa admitted that both teams (Ampem Darkoa Ladies and Hasaccas Ladies) have proved superior in the women’s league since its induction in 2012.
“Two teams have been the top teams over the period and that is Hasaacas and Ampem Darkoa. Hasaccas Ladies have won more league titles and Ampem Darkoa before our recent victory had two, now three. Definitely the superiority of Hasaacas motivated the ladies to want to win more. They prepare and were inspired to break that monopoly.”
He further expressed his excitement over the development and competitiveness of the women’s league in current times.
“The Ghana Women’s Premier League has become more competitive over the years and gradually developing. We started playing the national league in 2012/13 and now we are able to play in the African tournament,” he added.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies clinched the 2021/2022 Women’s Premier League title after a penalty shoot-out win against Hasaacas Ladies after the match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulatory time.
The Ampem Darkoa Ladies ended their league campaign as the only side to end the dominance of Southern Zone Champions, Hasaacas Ladies.
The team would now represent Ghana in the TotalEnergies Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League.
