President Akufo-Addo Assents to Ghana Shippers' Authority Act 2024

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially assented to the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) Act 2024, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s commercial shipping sector.

GSA in a statement revealed that the president officially assented to the bill on Friday, October 18, 2024.

The Act, passed by Parliament on July 29, 2024, aims to enhance the regulatory powers of the GSA, aiming to create a robust, fair, and internationally competitive environment for the shipping and logistics industry.

Established in 1974 as the Ghana Shippers’ Council, GSA was later rebranded in 1998 to reflect its expanded mandate. This new Act, which arrived during GSA’s 50th anniversary year, positions the organization to oversee all modes of transport sea, air, and land. By ensuring transparency in pricing, fairness in service delivery, and promoting efficiency, the Act strengthens Ghana’s appeal as a key destination for international trade.

GSA has expressed profound appreciation for the contributions of stakeholders in crafting this landmark legislation, noting that it lays a foundation for a resilient and sustainable shipping ecosystem in Ghana. “Together, we have built a regulatory framework that safeguards both the interests of service providers and consumers, benefiting the broader trade sectors and fostering growth,” the GSA’s statement emphasized.

As part of implementing the new law, GSA has launched a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate stakeholders on their rights and obligations. Additionally, GSA is developing a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to operationalize the Act and is actively soliciting input from industry stakeholders to ensure its successful adoption.
