President of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) UTAG, Prof. Eric Abavare, has called out the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for his silence on the galamsey issue.

He urged Bagbin to demonstrate the same determination in addressing illegal mining as he did in opposing LGBTQ+ activities.

Prof. Abavare pointed out that Bagbin was vocal and forceful in the fight against LGBTQ issues, questioning what actions he has taken regarding galamsey.

He suggested that if Bagbin is truly committed to tackling illegal mining, he should champion the cause with the same fervor he exhibited against LGBTQ activities, which would signal to the public that the government is actively addressing the problem. He expressed concern that, in his view, the Speaker of Parliament is complacent.

Additionally, he criticized the judiciary for its slow prosecution of individuals arrested for illegal mining, expressing sympathy for the Chief Justice due to the judiciary’s perceived failure to effectively combat the galamsey crisis.
