United Nations’ Food Agency the World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a firm notice of caution on Tuesday to South Sudan of an imminent famine to hit several parts of south Khartoum with need on the ground outstripping resources amidst a funding shortfall.
Reports indicate that South Sudan faces an unbalanced scale of demands to resources at a period highly impacted by a funding shortfall.
“The level of hunger and destitution and desperation that was found (is) severe and confirmed the risk of famine in those areas,” Laurent Bukera, WFP Country Director in Sudan, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Port Sudan.
South Sudan is presently grappling with maintaining the peace as threats of unrest increase within the state.
U.N officials early this year warned that escalating violence, misinformation, and ethnic tensions could push the country back into full-scale war, repeating the devastation of past conflicts.
