The Volta River Authority (VRA) announced the conclusion of its controlled spillage from the Akosombo Dam on October 30, 2023, following a release by the Authority.

The spillage, which began on September 15, 2023, was initiated due to rising water levels at the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams.

In a statement, the VRA expressed its commitment to providing relief and rehabilitation efforts to assist affected residents in restoring their lives and livelihoods. The spillage had adverse effects on communities along the lower Volta River Basin, particularly in the South, Central, and North Tongu districts of the Volta Region.

Numerous communities, including Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome and Anlo, experienced severe flooding and significant property damage.

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NaDMO), over 26,000 people were displaced and rendered homeless.

The devastating situation prompted various individuals, institutions and political figures to provide relief items and support to the affected residents.

Notably, President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahama Bawumia visited the impacted areas, and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minority caucus extended assistance to the victims.

The VRA has also initiated a substantial disinfection and fumigation exercise in the flood-affected communities, particularly in areas where floodwaters have receded significantly, such as Mepe in the North Tongu District. The exercise aims to ensure the safety and habitability of homes, public spaces, and the entire community.

The VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, Ing. Kwame Osei Mensah Darkwa, highlighted the Authority’s commitment to safety and emphasized that residents should await the completion of the fumigation exercise before returning to their homes.

The efforts of government agencies, stakeholders and the VRA have been crucial in addressing the aftermath of the Akosombo Dam spillage and assisting affected communities in their recovery.
