The Majority Caucus in Parliament has backed President Nana Akufo-Addo’s call to allow Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to stay in office to negotiate the $3 billion IMF deal and to also prepare and present the 2023 budget.

Some members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament on Tuesday mounted pressure on President Nana Akufo-Addo to sack Ofori-Atta, and the minister of state at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, to restore public confidence in the Ghanaian economy

However, after meeting with the president over the issue, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers have resolved to stand with the Finance Minister to supervise all the initiatives being taken by the government to address the woes of the economy before bowing out.

“…The president engaged members of the Caucus and requested that the issue be stood down until the conclusion of the round of negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the presentation of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy in November 2022, and the subsequent passage of the Appropriation Bill after which time the demand shall be acted upon,” the statement issued by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader on Wednesday said.

“After deliberations among the Majority Caucus… it was agreed to accede to the President’s appeal,” the statement added.
