The United States has extended a warm welcome to the African Union in anticipation of being the newest permanent member of the G20, a move, expected to bolster the group’s global influence and cooperation.
The National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan made this significant announcement at a press briefing at the White House U.S. on September 05, 2023.
He emphasized the importance of the African Union’s voice in the G20, stating, “We’re also looking forward to warmly welcoming the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 — the newest permanent member. We believe that the African Union’s voice will make the G20 stronger.”
This decision comes after extensive deliberations among G20 member nations, which include some of the world’s largest economies. The inclusion of the African Union is seen as a testament to the growing recognition of Africa’s economic and geopolitical significance on the global stage.
The African Union’s membership in the G20 is expected to provide a platform for addressing pressing global issues, including economic development, climate change, and regional stability. It also underscores the commitment of the United States and other G20 members to fostering stronger ties with African nations.
The annual G20 leaders’ summit will take place from September 9 to 10 in Delhi, the capital of India, and will bring together leading presidents and prime ministers from all around the world.
