Wilmar Africa Ltd. has made donation of relief items to flood victims in Mepe, Aflao and other affected areas in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region of Ghana.

Wilmar Africa Ltd. is a Ghana based top consumer business with an enviable record of producing the nation’s most patronized food brands like Frytol, Fortune Rice among others.

Marketing Manager of Wilmar Africa Limited, Ewuraba Ekua Adusei made a presentation of the items at the forecourt of Wilmar Africa Limited, Tema, to the Council of elders representing the various affected areas in the said region, where she noted that aside being moved by the magnitude of negative impacts caused by the floods, Wilmar as an international entity supports all precincts it operates in . “We are joining a teeming number of corporations and well meaning Ghanaians who are supporting the dam spillage victims; we were moved by the reportage from various media outlets we saw; Wilmar as a international business supports the various communities in which we operate and if Ghana is one of them, we are more than willing to help; they are our brothers and sisters so we have decided to also give food to support their nutritional needs and sanitary care products.” she said.

Council member and Divisional Chief of the Mepe Traditional Area and Warlord, Torgbe Kordzo Azagba IV on behalf of the people of Mepe and the Aflao township extended the warmest appreciation to Wilmar Africa Limited, and believed that the items donated came at a very needed time and will go a long way to ease hunger and curb the effects of malnourishment in the affected areas. “A lot has happened in the past few weeks; our foodstaffs have been destroyed, our properties have been destroyed; when you go to the place to see what the living condition of people in the affected areas even what is shown on television is just a small portion of it; we are grateful because these items will go a long way to help us in the community,”

Wilmar Africa Limited provided 100 bags of Fortune Rice, 100 cartons of Frytol Cooking oil, 100 cartons of Jamaa Soap, 100 cartons of Jamaa Detergent , 200 boxes of Alife soap, and 30 cartons of Fortune All Purpose Margarine. Wilmar also provided several trucks and drivers to transport the items to the communities.

Other members of the council also present were, Acting Paramount Chief of Mepe; Rudolph Kwadwo Gli, Torgbi of Aflao Traditional Area; Torgbui Tortsofia VII, Fiangor of Aflao Traditional Area; Mama Elorm Fiawotoe II, Miss Monica Asave-Owusu.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) commenced controlled water spillage of Akosombo and Kpong Dams on account of the consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir. The spillage of the two dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA), which commenced on September 15, 2023, to prevent the dams from collapsing, has submerged several homes and farmlands, displacing over 35,000 people.
