AP McCoy faces a wait for his 4,000th win after one of his two Chepstow rides on Wednesday was declared a non-runner.
The withdrawal of Mission Complete because of rain-softened ground means he can only reach the landmark at the Welsh track if he gets a spare ride.
"It could drag out a bit," the 39-year-old Northern Irishman told BBC Sport.
The 18-time champion jockey is on El Macca in the opening maiden hurdle at 13:10 GMT, and is next scheduled to ride at Towcester on Thursday.
There has been an increasing spotlight on the jockey as he approaches the milestone.
Doubles on three consecutive days brought him to the 3,998 mark following Monday's meeting at Kempton, but he drew a blank from three rides at Exeter on Tuesday.
Speaking before Wednesday's withdrawal, McCoy said: "I have only so-so rides at Chepstow and only one or two at Towcester on Thursday.
"Hopefully for all our sakes it can be as quick as possible."
McCoy has been crowned jump racing's champion jockey every year since his first season as a professional in 1995-96 and is the only jump jockey ever to have ridden more than 3,000 winners.
The next closest is Richard Johnson on 2,551.
Jockey Dominic Elsworth paid tribute to McCoy on Tuesday after winning Exeter's feature race, the Haldon Gold Cup, on 9-2 shot Somersby.
Elsworth said: "We're all looking forward to it [the 4000th win] in the weighing room as much as everyone else.
"It'll be an incredible, fantastic achievement and words cannot sum it up adequately. It's fantastic for himself, it's fantastic for racing.
"He's having a good bit of ribbing from all his colleagues in there but nothing that I can possibly repeat."
