International day of mother tongue observed in Accra

The Bureau of Ghana languages in collaboration  with the Ministry of Tourism,Arts and Culture today observed  the  International  Mother  Tongue Day at a colourful ceremony in Accra.
The day is celebrated on every  February 21,  this year’s celebration was on the theme:`Linguistic  diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development”.
The objective of the celebration was  to  drum  home  the  importance  of Ghanaian  languages and its  associate  benefits to the  country.
The  Minister  of  Tourism  Catherine  Afeku joined by the  board members  of  Bureau  of Ghana  languages and  some  linguistics lecturers  gave  credence   to law adding that  the  local  languages in  Ghana  helped  in  its national  development. The minister  in  her  statement  point  to the  fact that  the  local  languages  brings  about  peace ,foster  unity  and development  among  Ghanaians.
Madam  Catherine Afeku  urged  Ghanaians  to  celebrate  diversity  in  languages  and that the  peace the country was enjoying is  as a result of tolerance people have  for each other  in  the area of the  various  languages
She  urged  the Bureau  of  Ghana languages to  liaise  with  the private  sector  to see how  best they can use technology  to develop  the  local  languages and that  is  about  time  they make their  presence  felt.
