The deputy national communications director of GPRTU, Samuel Amoah has called for the establishment of a Driver’s Day by the government to honor and motivate commercial drivers. He emphasized the crucial role these drivers play in the economy by ensuring the transportation of people to their workplaces, thereby contributing to the country’s GDP.

Speaking to Happyghana.com, Mr. Amoah highlighted the significant sacrifices made by commercial drivers, such as adhering to government-approved fare increases despite rising fuel costs.
He noted that even with recent hikes in fuel prices, drivers have not increased fares as much as they could have.

He pointed out that despite poor road conditions, commercial drivers risk their lives and vehicles to serve the public.

He underscored the financial burdens faced by drivers, including the high costs of spare parts, roadworthy insurance, and fuel, yet they continue to serve the nation’s interests.

Mr. Amoah argued that while other workers, such as farmers, are recognized for their contributions, commercial drivers are often overlooked unless fuel prices rise or accidents occur.

He clarified that drivers are not necessarily asking for a holiday but rather a form of
apreciation for their efforts. He suggested that exemplary drivers could have their names and car numbers broadcasted on media platforms or be rewarded with a car by the government. This appeal he said is a heartfelt call for the government to recognize and celebrate commercial drivers, giving them a much-needed motivational boost.
