Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated that while the opposition is not against accountability, they strongly oppose human rights abuses, lawless conduct, and the excessive use of force by state security operatives.

Addressing the press on Thursday, March 20, in response to the National Security raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, Afenyo-Markin warned that such actions create a lawless environment where individuals feel emboldened to take the law into their own hands.

He described the situation as a dangerous trend that threatens the democratic fabric of the nation.

He reminded the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC) that political power is not permanent, citing shifts in parliamentary representation over the years.

He noted that while the current administration holds 187 seats and the presidency, history has shown that power dynamics can change.

He pointed out that at one time, his party the New Patriotic Party(NPP) held only 61 seats in a 200-member Parliament, but within four years, their numbers grew to over 100, allowing them to claim the majority.

According to him, the continuous cycle of using power to intimidate political opponents only fuels political instability and undermines democratic principles.

He urged the government to refrain from using security agencies as a tool for political persecution and instead focus on upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.
