The University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Education, Winneba Chapter (UTAG-UEW), has called for a thorough investigation into the murder of one of its members, Professor Mauwaadem Koku Amekedzer, whose body was discovered and exhumed from his residence in Gyahadze, a suburb of Winneba.

In a press release issued and signed by the UTAG-UEW President, Stephen Osei Akyiaw, and Secretary, Dr. Bernard Tutu-Boahene on Sunday, May 25, UTAG-UEW expressed profound sorrow and shock over the tragic incident, describing it as a loss that has shaken not only the academic community of UEW but also the entire nation.

“We extend our deepest condolences and share in the grief of the bereaved family, his students, colleagues, and the entire UEW fraternity during this difficult time,” the statement read.

The union acknowledged the solidarity shown by the UTAG National leadership and the National Executive Council (NEC) during this trying period.

UTAG-UEW also commended the Ghana Police Service for the swift commencement of investigations, which has led to the arrest of one suspect so far. However, the association urged the police to intensify efforts to ensure that all persons connected to the crime are brought to justice without delay.

Describing the killing as a “heinous act,” the association reiterated its commitment to support the investigation process in any way possible, stressing that accountability in such matters is vital for ensuring the safety and sanctity of Ghana’s academic institutions.

UTAG-UEW also made a passionate appeal to government, security agencies, and university authorities to collaborate in ensuring the safety and well-being of all staff and students across campuses.

UTAG-UEW vowed to honour the late professor’s legacy by continuing to stand for truth, justice, and the ideals he championed throughout his academic career.
