More than 100 residents of the Krachi East Municipality have been convicted by the Dambai District Magistrate Court for breaching sanitation by-laws.

The offenders were charged with indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other unhygienic practices that contribute to poor sanitation in the area.

The Oti Region has recorded over 23,000 cases of typhoid fever in the first quarter of 2025, a situation health officials attribute largely to unsafe environmental practices.

Regional Environmental Health Prosecutor, Patrick K. Gbafa, stressed that strict enforcement of sanitation laws is critical to safeguarding public health. He disclosed that fines imposed on offenders ranged between GH¢600 and GH¢840.44. He further cautioned landlords without toilet facilities to construct them within three months or risk prosecution.

Presiding Judge, His Worship Alhassan Dramani, underscored the importance of good hygiene, revealing that he had personally battled typhoid recently as a result of poor sanitation conditions.

Assembly Member for Dambai Central, Charles Awuranyi, commended the sanitation taskforce for its commitment and urged authorities to deal firmly with offenders to serve as a deterrent and encourage improved sanitation practices.
