The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has intensified efforts to enhance safety on Accra’s major roads by removing outdoor advertising signs that obstruct visibility and distract drivers.
In its latest operation, the Authority undertook a cleanup exercise along the Liberation Road, stretching from the Ako Adjei Interchange to the 37 Military Hospital Intersection.
The initiative follows similar exercises carried out in the Ablekuma North, Ayawaso West, and Ayawaso North municipalities, all within the Greater Accra Region.
In a statement released by the NRSA, the exercise forms part of a broader campaign to reduce road accidents and create safer commuting conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.
The Authority explained that removing unauthorized billboards and signages from road medians helps reduce visual distractions, improve driver focus, and enhance visibility on the roads.
“Fewer signs mean less cognitive and visual clutter for drivers, allowing for better focus on the road,” the statement read.
The statement also highlighted that a clearer view along pedestrian crossings and intersections helps minimize blind spots and lowers the risk of pedestrian knockdowns.
The NRSA emphasized its commitment to ensuring that Accra’s roads remain safe and orderly, urging all stakeholders, including advertisers and municipal authorities, to comply with road safety regulations.
“This initiative is all about creating a safer, more focused driving environment for everyone. Let’s all contribute to safer roads by staying alert and adhering to traffic regulations,” the statement added.
The Authority has assured that similar exercises will be extended to other parts of the country as part of its ongoing campaign to promote safer road environments nationwide.
