U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened possible military intervention in Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians, saying he has directed the recently renamed Department of War to “prepare for possible action.”
In a post shared on social media, Trump warned that the United States would immediately cut off all assistance to Nigeria if the government fails to curb what he described as the ongoing killing of Christians.
“The U.S. may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump stated.
He further added, “I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet — just like the terrorist thugs attack our cherished Christians! WARNING: The Nigerian Government better move fast!”
Trump’s remarks came a day after he announced that Nigeria would be placed on the U.S. Department of State’s list of “Countries of Particular Concern,” a designation reserved for nations accused of severe violations of religious freedom.
