Speculation is rife within political circles as sources indicate that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Deputy Majority Leader, is poised to take over the reins from Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament.

This potential shakeup comes amid preparations for the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) campaign ahead of the 2024 general elections.

While there is no immediate clarity on whether Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will retain his position as Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, reports suggest that he may be named as the Chairman of the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Committee.

Additionally, Frank Annoh Dompreh, the current Majority Chief Whip, is expected to ascend to the role of Deputy Majority Leader, paving the way for Habib Iddrisu to assume the position of Majority Chief Whip.

The anticipated changes in parliamentary leadership have been prompted by recent developments, including the nomination of Lydia Seyram Alhassan as Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation. As a result, Patricia Appiagyei is likely to be named as the First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, with Alex Tetteh Djornobuah expected to fill the position of Second Deputy Chief Whip.

A crucial meeting of the NPP’s National Council is scheduled for Monday to finalize the shakeup of the majority front bench, following President Nana Akufo-Addo’s recent Ministerial Reshuffle. The impending changes underscore the party’s commitment to realigning its parliamentary leadership ahead of the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, is set to unveil his campaign team to the National Executive Committee and National Council of the party today.

Sources suggest that former Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, is likely to be named as campaign manager for the 2024 general election, following his recent removal from the cabinet in President Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle.
