Introduction of E-levy can delay digitization agenda -digital think tank expresses concern

The General Secretary of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG), Evans Otumfuo, is confident business will pick up after they recorded a significant drop in transactions following the implementation of the e-levy.

The Association attributing the slump in transactions and usage of the platform after the rollout of the levy to consumer behavior says “this was expected.”

“The news flying around that business has been slow is true. From Sunday till Thursday, business has been slow but we are hoping it will bounce back. Before the implementation of the levy, we had anticipated a sharp decline in momo usage per the announcement and data presented by the Bank of Ghana.”

A section of the Ghanaian public has taken to social media to pour out their displeasure about the challenges with the implementation of the controversial electronic levy (E-Levy).

The implementation of the new 1.5% value tax on all electronic transactions above 100 Ghana cedi ($13; £11) started on Sunday, May 1.

On Twitter, for instance, some customers reported cases of wrong deductions.

Whiles the authority tries to solve these challenges; many are still worried about how the new tax may negatively affect their business, and some have temporarily suspended their transactions on the platform.

In an interview with Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show, Evans Otumfuo said, “Business has become slow but we hope in the coming months, Ghanaians will accept this as the new reality. They will accept that the e-levy and momo has come to stay and will continue to use the platform.

We understand every change has its challenges and just as we are experiencing with the implementation of the e-levy, we are hoping they will be corrected in the shortest possible time.”
