Claim and verify your accounts – MPs advised on surviving fake social media accounts

IT Specialist, Stephen Forson, has recommended security measures politicians and Members of Parliament (MP) especially, can employ to protect their social media accounts and guard their followers from falling prey to fraudsters.

Stephen Forson insists it is important for every public figure to claim and verify their accounts. “We need to educate our MPs and let them understand that as public figures it is important for them to claim and verify their social media accounts. It is important for an MP to alert Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other platform they are on to let them know who they are. Once they know you’re an MP, your account can be easily verified.”

According to him, the verification sign which appears on the account after its confirmation will set the original account aside and let everyone know that indeed “this is a genuine account I am dealing with so MPs should take this very serious.”

Revealing the process he goes through to vet and accept a friend request from a public figure, Stephen indicated, “for me what I do is go back and conduct a background research on the person, read a little bit before I go back and accept such requests. But it is important for MPs or their assistants to make sure their accounts are verified by all social media platforms,” he reiterated in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning show.

Members of Ghana’s Parliament have constantly suffered duplicate accounts of their social media. In recent times, managers of these fake accounts send out messages to the friends and followers of these politicians, asking then to contribute towards one initiative or the other. Some unsuspecting persons have fallen victim to these scams which also have a way of denting the hard earned reputations of the MPs.
