Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has reaffirmed the philosophical and historical roots of democracy during his first-ever visit to the West African nation, Ghana.
Addressing Ghana’s Parliament, Prime Minister Modi, admonished the need for democratic gains to be consolidated stating that, “Democracy is not merely a system. It is a part of our fundamental values from thousands of years ago”.
Drawing from India’s ancient traditions, PM Modi described democracy as being deeply ingrained in India’s civilization.
He referenced early republics, deliberative assemblies, and the moral philosophy of participation that stretches back millennia.
“It promotes dignity and supports human rights. True democracy fosters discussion and debate—it unites rather than divides.”
He emphasized that while democratic values take time to mature, nations must collectively preserve and nurture them to ensure peace, dignity, and prosperity for all.
