The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disqualified Philip Appiah Kubi, the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) replacement flagbearer, after discovering errors and illegalities in his nomination form.

This announcement was made by EC Chair Jean Mensa at a press conference on Tuesday, November 12.

Although the party was given the opportunity to correct the discrepancies, Mensa explained that some irregularities could not be overlooked, leading to Kubi’s disqualification from contesting in the upcoming election.

The GFP had already faced a significant setback due to the death of its founding leader and original flagbearer, Akua Donkor, on October 15. Her sudden passing forced the party to find a new candidate for the December 2024 presidential election. As a result, the EC granted the GFP a 10-day window to submit a new flagbearer nomination, which led to Kubi’s selection.

However, upon reviewing the documents, the EC found several issues that went beyond simple clerical errors. While the GFP addressed some of these issues, other aspects were deemed illegitimate and could not be accepted according to electoral laws.

She emphasized that the EC is committed to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, and any irregularities, regardless of the party’s attempts to fix them, cannot be accepted.
