Head of Operations at the Imports and Exports Department of Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) ,Jacob Amoako Mensah, has debunked claims that some people have been infected from consuming salmonella infested gizzard, as he states that the contaminated gizzards are still at the port.

In an interview on the Happy Morning Show on Happy 98.9FM, he stated: “We have a food safety management department that when there is any food-borne disease, they liaise with all the hospitals in Ghana. So if someone reports any food-borne disease in these hospitals, our people go for the data and collate those data. We cleared that consignment since 2019, and the data we have received from the Ghana Health Services has not implicated any gizzard as the cause of food borne disease”.

He also made known that if someone complains of food poisoning from gizzard then it is definitely not from the 2019 consignment.

Later in his submission, he admitted that the FDA had heard of cases involving infected gizzards but the food safety management department was yet to embark on their investigations.

Happy FM’s sources have indicated, however, that there have been reported cases of persons who have been affected by consuming infected gizzard. These people who wish to remain anonymous have revealed that symptoms of infection include diarrhea, nausea and unconsciousness.

Officials from the FDA have said that containers which were marked as contaminated were imported from Brazil into the country in 2019. However, the FDA has assured that the container with the contaminated gizzards is still at the port.
