The Brands Manager for Ghana Rugby League Federations, Serlom Kuwomu, says the Ghana Education Service (GES) has given his outfit the permission to introduce the sport in basic schools.

According to him, the target of the federation is to grow the sport at the grassroots level, hence the need to go to the basic schools where they can identify a lot of talent.

He revealed that the sport he described began at the University of Ghana a few years ago.

Speaking on Happy FM’s Time with the Federations with Ohene-Bampoe Brenya, he discussed how the Rugby League Federation intends to develop the game and make it popular in the country.

“We are looking at development, and we are currently in five regions.” The GES has given us approval to also introduce the sport in basic schools. We hope to attract more talented players to represent Ghana at the international level.

He urged parents to allow their children to get involved in the sport.

“Every sport carries some level of risk. We encourage parents to allow them, and it’s another opportunity for students. It shows a whole lot of value such as teamwork, discipline, and others. We encourage parents to allow their kids get involved in the sport”.

Mr Serlom Kuwomu disclosed that the Federation has had a discussion to start the game at the University of Cape Coast.

He added: “The target for the Federation is to ensure Ghana qualifies for the World Rugby League championship in 2025 in France”.
