A renowned economist Rev. Dr. Worlanyor Mensah has criticized government for repealing the Electronic- levy, urging government to leverage on the digital economy for economic growth.
Speaking on Happy FM’s Morning Show with Fati Shaibu Ali, Dr. Mensah argued that Ghana should be reprofiling its digital economy instead of removing policies that could support the country’s economic structure.
“There was no need for us to abolish the E-Levy. Looking at the world now, there is the need for us to leverage the digital economy and reprofile the country,” he stated.
Dr. Mensah highlighted the impact of the controversial GH¢1 petroleum levy, describing it as a “journey of no return”, emphasizing the need for accountability.
“There is no way that you develop the industrial sector without power or energy. Once the power sector is in crisis, there is a need to stabilize it”.
He emphasized that, the industrial sector needs power to operate efficiently hence the need for government to stabilize the energy sector.
The petroleum levy, introduced under the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, is expected to generate GH¢5.7 billion annually to support Ghana’s energy sector debt and ensure reliable power supply.
