Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has revealed that Ghana is set to launch the Universal QR Code payment system in March this year, to reduce the handling of more cash in trade transactions.

He was speaking at the Government’s first ever Town Hall Meeting held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

“Thanks to the Bank of Ghana, next month in March, Ghana will launch what we call, the Universal QR code payment system to make it possible for all retailers including the people who sell Kofi Brokeman and Waakye on the streets to receive payment from their customers directly on their mobile phones. Directly, without a point of sale device being necessary. This is a major transformation”, he said.

He further revealed that Ghana was the first country in Africa to develop the Universal QR Code payment system.
