The Black Queens of Ghana endured a disappointing start to their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, falling 2-0 to defending champions South Africa in their opening match.
Ghana began the match with energy and purpose, carving out early chances. Anasthesia Achiaa nearly put the Queens ahead, forcing South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini to tip her shot onto the crossbar.
Despite Ghana’s promising start, South Africa struck first against the run of play. Grace Asantewaa was penalized for a foul on Noxolo Cesane in the penalty area, allowing Linda Motlhalo to calmly convert from the spot just before the 30-minute mark. Moments later, Jermaine Seoposenwe doubled the lead with a precise low finish in the 33rd minute.
After halftime, coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side intensified their search for a way back into the game. Ghana created several opportunities, with Alice Kusi and Evelyn Badu both rattling the crossbar. Substitute Princess Marfo also tested Dlamini, but the South African keeper remained resolute. Doris Boaduwaa, Ghana’s reigning Women’s Footballer of the Year, was unable to capitalize on a promising counterattack, sending her effort wide.
Despite their attacking intent, Ghana’s inability to convert chances proved costly on their return to continental competition after a six-year absence. The Black Queens now turn their focus to upcoming matches against Mali and Tanzania, aiming to secure the results needed to progress to the knockout rounds.
