The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah, has called for support for athletes who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games in the summer.
Team Ghana had a new member as part of its contingent to Tokyo as the 4×100 relay team booked a ticket at the World Relays in Poland.

It is the first time that Ghana’s relay team will be competing at the Olympic Games since 2004 in Athens.

Three boxers from the Black Bombers team have also qualified for the Olympic Games.

Speaking in an interview, the GOC president congratulated all the athletes and Federations to have secured a ticket to the Olympic Games.

“The athletes have done well and I congratulate the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Ghana Boxing Association (GBA) and Rex Brobbey for his Ghana’s fastest Human project”, he told Ohene-Bampoe Brenya on Happy Sports on Happy98.9 FM.

“In terms of preparations for these athletes, the GOC played a key role, for instance when the amateur boxers were going for their qualifiers we paid over $14,000 to them when they went to Senegal.

“There is also the Olympic solidarity scholarship to some of these athletes. For the track and field, they were given $10,000, and even in this competition, they have received $9,000 for their expenses. In all, within 2020-21 the GOC has spent close to $110,000 on the national athletics federation”, he disclosed.

The former Ghana Weightlifting Federation president called on corporate Ghana to support and invest in the athletes ahead of the game.
“The lessons we can take from this is that when we invest in the athletes they will be able to earn medals. We will call on everybody to come on board to support these athletes as they prepare for the Games”.
