There’s no agreement to halt recruitment processes and payments - Information Minister to Mahama’s Transition Team

Government has expressed disappointment over Organised Labour’s decision to proceed with a nationwide strike on Thursday, October 10, 2024, despite recent discussions and agreements aimed at addressing the growing issue of galamsey.

Organised Labour has been pressing the president to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining and to implement long-term solutions to stop the environmental destruction caused by the practice.

In a statement issued by the Information Ministry on Monday, October 7, 2024, and signed by Minister Fatimatu Abubakar, the government expressed surprise at the planned strike, reaffirming its commitment to combating illegal mining.

The minister also highlighted that both parties had reached a mutual understanding during their recent talks.

“We are shocked by Organised Labour’s decision to continue with the strike, especially after the government’s demonstrated commitment to fighting illegal mining,” the statement said.

The government reaffirmed its support for a proposal urging all presidential candidates to sign a pact against galamsey.

Additionally, it announced plans to revoke the controversial Environmental Protection Regulations 2023 (L.I. 2462) when Parliament reconvenes, signaling its commitment to adopting stricter environmental policie
