Editor in Chief of the web-based news portal, WhatsUp News, David Tamakloe has lashed out at Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo after the latter sent out a solidarity message to the people of Guinea after their leader, Alpha Conde´ was overthrown by the military.

Although he is against the coup, David Tamakloe argues the people of Guinea are in a celebratory mood with their President being overthrown and he is only glad Guineans are happy.

Reacting to a message of solidarity shared by President Akufo-Addo with the Guinean people, the editor said, “When I saw the statement from President Akufo-Addo as the ECOWAS Chair, the statement which states he is in solidarity with the Guinean people means he is in support of the coup because the people are happy about the development.”

According to David Tamakloe, President Akufo-Addo’s position on the Guinea situation is hypocritical. “The President of Ghana is issuing a statement that is a bit hypocritical. The President attended Alpha Conde’s swearing-in ceremony when he knew the latter was breaching the constitution of Guinea. What did Akufo-Addo say when the 83-year-old man decided to breach the constitution? And now Akufo-Addo is issuing a statement saying he is in solidarity with the people of Guinea? This is hypocrisy at its peak,” he stated.

He explained that the coup was a result of 3 critical factors which include the corruption concerns the people had of the government, the appointment of certain people into government and public office and the sentiment of the President abusing the constitution and seeking a third term in office.

To him, the Guinea coup is a message to all governments in Africa. “If they don’t respect the constitution and try to suppress the people, this is what happens. They’re likely to suffer a similar fate,” he told Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show.

Soldiers in Guinea staged an uprising in the capital Conakry. In a short broadcast on state television, Guinean army officer Mamady Doumbouya said they have dissolved the constitution and the government.

This followed unverified videos shared on social media, apparently showing President Alpha Conde´ bring surrounded by soldiers. His whereabouts are still unclear.

ECOWAS has however condemned the Guinean military’s arrest of President Alpha Conde´. The statement demanded the unconditional release of Conde´ and his associates.

The statement signed by its Chair, President Akufo-Addo of Ghana urged the military to act in a republican manner and expressed “solidarity with the Guinean people and government.”
