Some shops in parts of Accra have been closed and residents are undergoing a massive cleanup exercise today, Tuesday, July 2, following a directive from the Ga Mantse.

This exercise initiated by the Ga Traditional Council, led by Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II is in anticipation for the upcoming Homowo festival.

Mr. Daniel Ofori, Community Leader at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), who was at Akoto Lante where the cleanup exercise was also ongoing stated that, the exercise is going well and people in the community came out in their numbers to clean.

“So far so good, everyone in the community came out in their numbers to help with it and also desilt the gutters to ensure proper drainage and prevent blockages” he told the Happynews.com.

He stated that this is an essential maintenance activity for effective water flow and to also avoid flooding or water damage.

Explaining why some shops around had opened and going about their business although they were told to close he explained that, the clean up exercise has been divided across hence it was not offensive for some shops to be open.

“It just means it’s not time for them to start their cleanup theirs might be done tomorrow or the day after so they have done nothing wrong opening their shops and selling. Once it’s their turn they’ll also close their shops”.

He described the overall exercise as a very good one and disclosed how satisfied he was with the residents working with excitement because the initiative will benefit all.

Asafoatse Adama Gbadi a representative from the Gbese Traditional Council who was also taking part in the exercise, mentioned that they were facing some challenges due to choked gutters.

“We the “asafo” are doing well to put our surroundings in check because, zoomlion and AMA, are not keenly interested in cleaning up the vicinity due to the choked gutters so we have taken it upon ourselves to do this clean up exercise as the Ga Mantse instructed”.

He added that prior to this exercise, the youth of the community had been taken through vigorous training by some sanitation organizations in the country to help and also educate individuals in the community on ways to keep it tidy.
