The Kenyans in Ghana Association (KGA) hosted a celebration of Mashujaa Day on 19th October 2024, bringing together Kenyans residing in Ghana to honor the heroes and heroines who have shaped Kenya’s history, culture, and progress. The event was a vibrant display of Kenyan patriotism, community spirit, and cultural pride, marking an important moment for the Kenyan Diaspora in Ghana.

Mashujaa Day, celebrated annually on October 20th, is a national holiday in Kenya to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the country’s freedom and development. The event in Accra served as a unique opportunity for Kenyans in Ghana to reflect on their shared history and connect with one another despite being far from home.

In his keynote address, the Guest of Honor, the Acting High Commissioner of Kenya to Ghana, Mr. Daniel Kottut, urged the Kenyan community in Ghana to continue representing their country with dignity and commitment. He stated, “Mashujaa Day is not just a day to reflect on the heroes of our past, but also to challenge ourselves to be the heroes of today and tomorrow. I encourage all Kenyans living in Ghana to remain diligent and exemplary in how we represent our Diaspora community. Our actions, achievements, and collaborations here contribute to building stronger bonds between Kenya and Ghana.” Mr. Kottut emphasized the importance of showcasing the best of Kenya through hard work, integrity, and unity, reminding the attendees of the critical role the Diaspora plays in advancing Kenya’s interests abroad.

The Chairperson of the Kenyans in Ghana Association, Emma Wenani’s remarks focused on the essence of community, unity, and collaboration among Kenyans living in Ghana. She said, “Living so far from home, it is essential that we come together as a community to support and uplift each other. Today is not just a celebration of Kenya’s history, but also a celebration of our unity and resilience as Kenyans living in Ghana. Together, we are flying the Kenyan flag high, and I am proud of how we continue to embody the values of togetherness and mutual support.” Ms. Wenani further reflected on the association’s efforts throughout the year, highlighting the importance of continued community engagement. She added, “Our association has remained committed to fostering a strong sense of belonging for Kenyans in Ghana, whether through cultural events, welfare support, or collaborative activities. I encourage all Kenyans here to actively participate in the association, register as members, and contribute to our collective success.”

The Mashujaa Day celebration was a festive and colorful occasion, with Kenyan music, dance performances, and authentic Kenyan cuisine on offer. The event provided attendees with a taste of home and an opportunity to reconnect with their Kenyan heritage. The highlight of the day was a showcase that included performances of Kenyan songs and dances, bringing the warmth of Kenya’s diverse cultures. In her speech, Ms. Wenani took time to express deep gratitude to the sponsors and partners who made the event a success. She said, “This celebration would not have been possible without the incredible support of our sponsors: Kenya High Commission, Accra, Consolidated Bank Ghana, Kenya Airways, Hurupay,  Melcom, BelAqua, Mellow Farms, Midway Hospital, and Sahara Solace Your generous contributions reflect the spirit of partnership and collaboration that we strive to uphold as a community, and we are truly grateful for your support.”

The Kenyans in Ghana Association continues to play a vital role in uniting and empowering Kenyans living in Ghana through various initiatives, cultural events, and welfare programs.
