The Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Mathew Nyindam, has downplayed the Tamale High Court ruling that annulled his election and ordered a fresh poll, insisting he is confident of retaining his seat should a rerun be conducted.
The court on Friday directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to organise a new parliamentary election within 30 days, after ruling that irregularities affecting 41 polling stations compromised the integrity of the December 2024 results.
Lawyers for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal, successfully argued that inconsistencies in the pink sheets breached key electoral regulations, particularly Regulations 39 and 43 of CI 127.
However, reacting to the decision, Mr. Nyindam maintained that he legitimately won the election and remains the sitting MP.
“I am still the MP for Kpandai. I won by a decisive majority,” he told journalists, stressing that nothing about a rerun threatens his mandate.
His legal team has since filed notices of appeal and a stay of execution, describing the ruling as flawed and claiming that any alleged irregularities would not have overturned the results.
Mr. Nyindam dismissed the petition as “frivolous,” adding that the court’s judgment does not reflect the true will of Kpandai voters.
