The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Charles Amofa, has addressed the ongoing issue of unpaid bonuses owed the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national football team.

The senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, are currently owed outstanding bonuses from their qualification games for both the African Women’s Cup of Nations and the 2024 Olympic Games. Each player is reportedly owed $7,500, even after their bonuses were slashed by 50%.

Reports reaching Happy Sports also suggest that, the Black Queens are planning to boycott the final Olympic qualifier against Zambia, on February 23, if the bonuses aren’t paid.

In an exclusive interview with Happy FM, Amofa emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to resolving the matter promptly, stating, “The ministry is calling for the Black Queens to be patient, we are working assiduously around the clock to pay anything owed them.”

He assured both the players and the public that the Ministry is actively engaged in finding a resolution, stating, “We will have engagements with their leadership on the way forward, whether payments will be done before or after the match but it will come.”

He reiterated the Ministry’s recognition of the Black Queens’ outstanding performance and emphasized the importance of ensuring that they receive the compensation they deserve. “We understand the significance of this issue, especially considering the crucial upcoming match against Zambia.

“Rest assured, the Ministry is prioritizing the welfare of our national teams, and we are committed to ensuring that the Black Queens are duly compensated for their hard work and dedication.”

The game is expected to be hosted at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, February 23 with kick-off scheduled at 16:00 GMT.
