The Minority in Parliament has launched a scathing attack on the judiciary, rejecting a High Court order for a re-run of the Kpandai parliamentary election and daring any attempt to cite them for contempt.
Addressing a press conference in Accra today, 26 November, Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, condemned what he described as the “shameful conduct” of the court in the matter.
He said the caucus was alarmed by the circumstances under which the court ordered a rerun of the Kpandai election, after a party in the case had filed a notice of withdrawal.
According to him, instead of delivering its earlier scheduled judgment, the trial judge allegedly stayed away and later issued a new order directing that the election be conducted again.
The Minority further questioned the impartiality and integrity of the judicial process, insisting that the decision flies in the face of an earlier Supreme Court ruling on a similar matter, a ruling they claim the judge appeared unaware of.
“We will not be intimidated by any so-called contempt charges. If they like, they can send all of us to Nsawam Prison,” Afenyo-Markin declared, stressing that the Minority was ready to stand up to what they perceive as judicial overreach and bias.
