Nations FC striker Emmanuel Annor has broken his silence after being fined GH₵500 by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for his goal celebration against Asante Kotoko in a recent Premier League clash.
After finding the net, Annor lifted his shirt to reveal an undershirt that read “I belong to Jesus” — a gesture the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee deemed a breach of league rules, which prohibit religious or political messages during matches. In their May 13 statement, the committee emphasized the need to maintain neutrality on the pitch and cited regulations meant to avoid potentially divisive displays.
Annor responded via social media, questioning the fairness of the decision and drawing a comparison with other forms of expression often seen in global football.
“Why can football players celebrate LGBTQ+ sexuality but not their love for Jesus?” he wrote.
He ended his post with a scripture from Romans 14:8 and added, “It’s kingdom work on the pitch!”
His remarks have sparked widespread debate. While many supporters have rallied behind him, defending his right to express his faith, others say the GFA was simply enforcing established rules that apply to all players, regardless of belief or background.
