The Deputy National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Arko Gunn, has declared that the party is determined to retain the Akwatia parliamentary seat for at least five elections.

His statement follows the NDC’s victory in the Akwatia by-election on Tuesday, September 2, where Bernard Bediako Baidoo was elected as the new Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Speaking in an interview monitored by Happyghana.com, Mr. Gunn acknowledged that Akwatia has long been regarded as one of Ghana’s swing constituencies.

However, he stressed that the NDC is committed to working tirelessly to secure and hold the seat over the long term.

He explained that before the NDC intensified its campaign, many constituents viewed both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the same and were therefore reluctant to participate in the polls.

According to him, engaging with the people and clarifying the NDC’s distinct values and policies helped change this perception.

Mr. Gunn further alleged that even before the burial of victims of the recent helicopter crash, the NPP was in Akwatia spreading propaganda in an attempt to win support. He, however, noted that the NDC successfully countered those narratives within two weeks, which contributed to their victory.

He expressed profound appreciation to the people of Akwatia for their trust and confidence in the NDC.
