The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deploying thugs to intimidate voters in the Akwatia constituency, despite heavy police presence.
Mr. Tanko said, “We just had an intelligence this morning… The NPP has brought some thugs, put them in some location, and national security is on their heels.”
The by-election, triggered by the death of MP Ernest Kumi, is being held today, September 2, with over 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations.
More than 5,000 police officers have been deployed to maintain order.
Mr. Tanko assured voters that security agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
“It won’t be long, they will be rounded up… Nobody is going to be allowed to intimidate anybody here.”
He urged constituents to vote confidently, emphasizing that the NDC is committed to a peaceful and fair process.
