The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah, on Tuesday, August 27, 2025, raised alarm over possible electoral violence during the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
He accused the National Democratic Congress of training and deploying thugs, some possibly dressed in police uniforms, to intimidate voters and disrupt the election.
Mr. Ahiagbah demanded that the Ghana Police Service release the full list of senior officers and regional commanders deployed to the polling areas. He also called on the police to ensure all officers on duty wear visible name tags to prevent infiltration.
Citing history, he recalled the 2015 “Let My Vote Count” protest, where demonstrators were brutally assaulted and one lost an eye. He also referred to the recent violence in Ablekuma North, where NPP officials and supporters came under attack.
Mr. Ahiagbah warned that the NPP would defend its members if the police failed to protect them. He stressed that the party’s demands aim to guarantee a peaceful and transparent electoral process in Akwatia.
