Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that the position of Director of Communications within the party will now be an elected role, rather than an appointed one.
Delivering his address at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, Dr. Bawumia said the decision was aimed at empowering party members to choose who best represents their voice in public communications.
He explained that the change would give the grassroots a say in selecting someone who can effectively communicate on their behalf, adding that the previous appointment system was often marred by favouritism, which contributed to tensions among party communicators. He, however, clarified that Deputy Communications Directors would continue to be appointed.
Dr. Bawumia also urged party members to put an end to internal conflicts and public attacks as the NPP prepares for the crucial January 31 flagbearer elections.
He stressed that disunity only weakens the party’s chances in future elections and called on members to channel criticism through appropriate platforms and maintain a spirit of discipline and solidarity.
He urged party members to project an image of maturity and unity if it hopes to earn the trust of Ghanaians and gain power in 2028.
