Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has outlined the government’s ongoing agenda to modernize and reform the Ghana Prisons Service, emphasizing infrastructure development, capacity building, and initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and humane treatment.
Speaking at the Graduation Parade of Prisons Cadet Course Intake 32 at the Prison Officers Training School, Roman Ridge, Accra on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that over the next fiscal cycle, the service will benefit from significant investments aimed at empowering officers to fulfill their constitutional mandate of safe custody, humane treatment, and reformation in line with international best practices.
She said these efforts will improve both the welfare of officers and the dignity of inmates.
The Vice President also highlighted the Ghana Prison Service’s “Think Prison 360 Degree Initiative,” a project designed to transform the service into a modern, secure, and self-sustaining institution.
The initiative she said seeks to build a technology-driven correctional system that supports economic growth, national development, and reshapes public perception of the service.
Under the strategy, key interventions include enhanced welfare, mechanized agriculture, industrialization, enterprise creation, and sustainability projects.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted ongoing ventures for large-scale manufacturing of textiles, furniture, sanitary, and construction products, which aim to create jobs, expand internally generated revenue, and equip inmates with practical skills for reintegration into society.
She described the reforms as turning “incarceration into innovation,” providing prisoners with work experience, hope, and opportunities for productive post-release lives.
