Communication team member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alexander Akuoko has charged government to sack district police commanders in all areas rife with galamsey activities.
According to him, the fight against galamsey should be an easy task if all police officers in galamsey areas are dutiful.
He revealed some of these law enforcement officers take bribes from illegal miners and turn a blind eye to their activities when they should be thinking of the well-being of residents in their jurisdiction.
“The galamsey fight shouldn’t be a difficult one. Every district has a police station and that should have made the galamsey fight easier. If they are not able to stop galamsey operators from operating, then district police commanders in areas where galamsey is prominent should be fired. They should not be transferred but fired outright,” he told Sefah-Danquah on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show.
Alexander Akuoku argues some galamsey operators have the backing of politicians making it close to impossible for honest policemen from hunting them down.
With a punitive policies put in place against illegal mining for both financiers and galamsey operators, he believes the battle against the menace will be won.
