South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, is set to meet President Trump on Wednesday, with hopes to extinguish tensions that have risen over the past few months.
Trump’s administration cut funding to the country in February and last week granted refugee status to a group of white South Africans it said were facing racial discrimination – a claim the South African government denies.
Reports indicate that Ramaphosa’s trip to Washington will be set towards restoring amicable relations with the United States through a couple of trade proposals.
Further reports indicate that one potential proposal would be for Tesla led by Elon Musk, a close ally and adviser to Trump – to receive favourable tariffs on its imports into South Africa in exchange for building electric vehicle charging stations.
