South African government commences 11 party parliamentary term

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has opened a new parliamentary term on Thursday to mark the official start of his 11-party coalition government,

The move comes after a historic election result which kicked his African National Congress party out of its majority position in Parliament.

This marks the biggest shift in South African politics since 1994, with long time ruling ANC securing only 40% of the vote. The ANC now shares power with other parties for the first time in South Africa’s 30 years of democracy, including the main opposition, Former President Jacob Zuma’s Democratic Alliance.

Reports indicate that voters were driven by anger over high unemployment levels and inequality and the failing state of many basic public services.
