Tensions between Ghana’s Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, are drawing international attention, with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations expected in Accra this week.
Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee, Charles Owiredu, confirmed the development, saying the minister’s visit is aimed at facilitating diplomatic dialogue to ease the standoff.
“The South African Minister is set to touch down in Ghana to engage our Foreign Minister on this particular matter,” Owiredu revealed. “We need to use diplomatic standards to solve this, not threats and confrontations. It doesn’t help anybody.”
The diplomatic engagement follows a stern warning from Ghana’s Communications Minister, Samuel Nartey George, who threatened to suspend DStv’s operating licence by Wednesday, August 7, if subscription fees are not reduced in line with regulatory expectations.
“We will not allow any company to exploit Ghanaian consumers. If MultiChoice fails to comply, their licence will be revoked,” Sam George cautioned.
