The United States has announced fresh tariff hikes on a range of Indian exports, escalating trade tensions between the two countries.
According to reports President Donald Trump made hints of the move last week, stating that the decision aims to protect American industries and reduce the trade deficit with India.
The new tariffs target products such as textiles, steel, and certain agricultural items, which form a significant part of India’s export basket to the U.S. It is recorded as the highest in US – India history.
Trump emphasized that the U.S. has faced “unfair trade practices” for years and insisted that India must provide greater market access for American goods. “The time has come for a fair and reciprocal trade relationship,” he said.
The tariff increase follows months of unsuccessful negotiations between Washington and New Delhi. Analysts warn the move could strain diplomatic relations further, as India remains one of America’s key strategic partners in Asia.
Indian officials have expressed disappointment over the decision, with the Ministry of Commerce describing it as “regrettable” and indicating that retaliatory measures could be considered.
