Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has been cautioned by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson that he could face a prison sentence if he fails to present the mini-budget to Parliament.

The warning was issued during a parliamentary sitting on Thursday, December 19.

Dr. Amin Adam has reportedly been absent from Parliament for four consecutive days, leaving the budget for the first quarter of the upcoming year unaddressed.

His absence has sparked serious concerns among Members of Parliament, with some accusing the government of neglecting its fiscal responsibilities during a critical transitional period.

Addressing the House, Dr. Ato Forson voiced frustration over the Finance Minister’s continued absence and emphasized the importance of fulfilling constitutional obligations.

He warned that failing to present the mini-budget promptly could result in significant legal and political consequences.

“There are severe penalties for not doing this, including a jail term,” Dr Forson said.

Dr. Ato Forson also reminded government officials of their obligations under the Constitution and the Public Financial Management (PFM) Act, which requires strict adherence to fiscal procedures to maintain economic stability.

He urged the Speaker of Parliament to take immediate action to ensure the Finance Minister’s attendance.

The absence of Dr. Amin Adam has drawn widespread criticism, with many perceiving it as a failure to address the nation’s pressing economic challenges.

Members of Parliament have emphasized the importance of accountability and called on the government to prioritize its responsibilities, particularly as the country prepares to enter a new fiscal year.
